Which Iranian Dates Are Produced More Than Others?
Mazafati date has the most production, both in terms of volume produced and in terms of productivity per hectare. The second place goes to the Kabkab date, which has many fans. The third place belongs to Shahani dates and other types of dates are in the next ranks.
Which Iranian Provinces Produce the Most Dates?
The provinces of Khuzestan, Bushehr, Kerman, Fars, Hormozgan, and Sistan and Baluchistan are the biggest producers of Iranian dates. Most of the known dates are produced in these provinces. Dates are also produced in some other provinces, such as Yazd, Isfahan, Kermanshah, Kohkiloyeh Boyer Ahmad, South Khorasan, etc. However, Kerman province has taken the lead from other provinces in the field of date production by cultivating 59,182 hectares of dates.

The Biggest Importer of Dates in the World
The largest importer of dates in the world is India, which imports about 240,350,000 US dollars. In 2021, India has imported 224 million dollars of dates. Morocco and UAE are also key markets, whose import value in the same year was about 222 and 124 million dollars. In general, the world import of dates in 2021 amounted to 1,834,084,000 US dollars, which has increased by about ten percent annually compared to 2017 and is considered a good growth in its kind. However, the trend pattern shows significant fluctuations during the studied period.
In 2017, India still held the first position. In that year, India imported about 242 million dollars of dates, which is not much different from 2021. In addition, the first five date-importing countries have maintained the first five positions with only a slight change in the position over the past years. In general, the world import of dates has grown by 77.5 percent from 2012 to 2016, and by 13 percent between 2016 and 2020 (in other words, the number 64.1 billion dollars has reached 86.1 billion dollars).
In terms of volume, India was the largest importer of dates in 2020 with more than 362,209 tons. UAE ranked second with 159,000 tons and Morocco ranked third with 76,000 tons. In the date import market, India has been at the top of the list of importers for consecutive years and there’s no noticeable change in the first to third place of this product. The traditional importers of dates in recent years were India, UAE, and Morocco.
Iran's rank in the Export of Dates
Iran held the first place in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, Iran exported about 250 million dollars’ worth of dates to countries around the world. Meanwhile, the largest exporter of dates in the world in 2018 was Iran, which exported 338 million dollars of dates to other countries. But in 2019, Iraq was at the top of date exporters. In that year, Iraq was able to export about 369 million dollars of dates to different countries of the world. In the next year, that is 2020, Tunisia with about 311 million dollars of dates or 14. 3% of the world's exports became the largest exporter of dates in the world and Iran took the second place. But in terms of volume, Iran was the largest exporter of dates in 2020 with more than 338,406 tons.
Export of Iranian dates
Iran's date products are mostly exported in bulk to all parts of the world and the target countries export the same product to the rest of the world with better luxury packaging. Depending on the region where the date is grown, the date harvest time varies from early summer to early autumn. The date harvesting season is also the time of major date buying and selling, and traded dates are stored in warehouses and cold storage. The main price of dates is influenced by factors such as the number of exports, the proximity to the holy month of Ramadan (due to the increase in the sale of dates inside Iran in this month), and the export policies implemented by the government. In 2021, Turkey and Azerbaijan were the biggest importers of dates from Iran, followed by India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Denmark, Ukraine, and Germany (according to Trade Map). In this way, these countries can be introduced as the best countries for exporting dates from Iran. However, there are still other countries that, despite the capacity to buy dates from Iran, have not yet received the attention of the exporters.
Exporting Iranian Dates to Türkiye
According to Trade Map, the number of Turkey’s dates imported in 2021 was about 63 million and 800 dollars. The biggest exporters of dates to Turkey in 2021, were Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Palestine, and Iran, respectively. According to the statistics of the official website of the Chamber of Commerce, Iran's date export to Turkey in 2020 was about 28 million and 200 thousand dollars, and the most types of dates exported to this country were Mazafati and Shahani. Of course, the types of Sayer, Kalute, Zahedi, Khassui, Kabkab, and Piarom are also seen among the export figures of Iranian dates to Turkey, and this shows a slight decrease compared to the export statistics of 2015, which was about 29 million and 100 thousand dollars.
The Export of Iranian Dates to Russia
Iran ranks 22nd among the countries that export dates to Russia, and this shows the potential of increasing exports to this country. The total import of Russian dates is reported at about $13 million in Trade Map; meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce has reported the amount of Iran's date exports to Russia in 2020 about 8 million and 900 thousand dollars, which does not show a significant difference compared to 5 years before. The most dates exported to Russia from Iran are Mazafati dates. However, other varieties of Sayer, Shahani, Kauteh, Zahedi, Khassui, Kabkab, and Piarom are also visible among the types of dates exported.
Iranian Dates Export to India
According to Trade Map statistics, in 2021, India imported a total of 240 million and 300 thousand dollars of dates, most of which came from Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. Iran is also in third place. According to the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Iran exported $56 million worth of dates to India in 2020, most of which included fresh or dried additional dates. However, this figure has doubled compared to five years ago, and the Tehran Chamber of Commerce reported the value of Iran's date exports to India in 2015 as 29,700,000 dollars.
Exporting Iranian Dates to Ukraine
Ukraine's date export in 2021 was worth about 7 million 382 thousand US dollars, of which nearly 4 million 736 thousand dollars were imported from Iran to Ukraine. In fact, Iran ranks first among other exporters of dates to Ukraine, and Algeria ranks second with $911,000 worth of exports. The value of importing dates from Iran to Ukraine in the previous five years was much lower than in 2021 and (about 1 million 600 thousand dollars). Among the Iranian dates exported to Ukraine, Mazafati, Kabkab, Zahedi, Shahani, Sayer, and Kaluteh dates are the most prominent.
Iran’s Export Dates to Iraq
Considering that Iraq shares a border with Iran and these two countries are neighbors, it is very natural that they have valuable trade exchanges with each other. This issue is also evident in the export of Iranian dates to Iraq. The value in 2015 was around 13 million and 750 thousand dollars and in 2020 it was around 14 million and 777 thousand dollars. In the case of this country, the export value of Kabkab, Mazafati, and Sayer dates has been slightly higher than other types.
The Export of Iranian Dates to Afghanistan
According to the statistics of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, the value of the date exports to Afghanistan in 2015 was about 17 million and 750 thousand dollars, and in 2020, it reached about 24 million and 500 thousand dollars. The people of this country pay more attention to Mazafati and Zahedi varieties among the different varieties of this fruit. However, other types such as Kalute, Sayer, Shahani, etc. are also exported to Afghanistan. This country, like Iraq, has the advantage of being a neighbor and a having border with Iran, which can affect the commercial relations of the two countries. Especially since Afghanistan, unlike Iraq, does not have a suitable and favorable climate for growing palm trees and harvesting dates, and naturally, it needs to import dates from other countries.
Iranian Dates Export to China
In 2020, the value of date imports to China was about 5 million US dollars, of which 3 million dollars belonged to Iran. In 2015, the value of date exports to China was about 3 million 248 thousand US dollars, of which 2 million 400 thousand dollars was from Iran. While in the past, dates exported to China were mostly limited to three types (Mazafati Dates mostly), recently the variety of export dates has increased and the Shahani variety is at the top of all. In 2021, Iran ranked fourth in the export of dates to China with an export of 525 thousand dollars, and the import of Chinese dates from the whole world this year was equal to 4 million and 866 thousand dollars.
Iranian Date Exports to Germany
The import of German dates in 2021 was worth 85 million and 600 thousand dollars, among which Iran's share of 4 million and 740 thousand dollars was ranked as the fifth date export to Germany. The countries of Tunisia with 34 million 700 thousand, Algeria with 7 million 360 thousand, and Palestine with 6 million dollars were in the first to third positions. According to the report of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, the value of Iran's exports to Germany in 2020 was about 2 million 200 thousand dollars and in 2015 it was about 1 million 400 thousand dollars. Among all the issued figures, the additional figure had the highest value by far.
