What Are the Uses of Palm Oil?

Palm oil has more efficiency and lower production cost than other vegetable oils, which is why the global production and demand of Palm oil is increasing rapidly. Therefore, oil palm plantations are expanding throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America. However, such indiscriminate expansion can cause the destruction of tropical forests, which are a vital habitat for many endangered species. On the other hand, palm vegetable oil is a versatile oil that makes it a unique product. This oil is semi-solid at room temperature and resistant to oxidation, so it can provide a longer shelf life in products containing palm. In addition, it is stable at high temperatures, so it gives fried products a crispy and tender texture. It is also odorless and colorless, so it does not change the appearance or smell of food products. Palm oil is as widely used in Asian and African countries as sunflower or olive oil in England. In addition to being versatile, the palm is very early bearing compared to other oil plants. This tree can produce products almost all year round and become an attractive and stable income for industries. Palm oil can be used both as raw and refined oil. Palm vegetable oil in its raw form has a dark orange color, but its refined form is odorless and light yellow in color. This feature makes palm a valuable material in the production of products such as margarine, mayonnaise sauces, confectionery, soap, candles, and cosmetics such as lipsticks.

Palm oil is mainly composed of palmitic acid and oleic acid, which are among the most abundant fatty acids in nature, and its saturated fatty acid content is 50%. Palm kernel oil mainly consists of lauric acid and its saturated fatty acid content is more than 80%. The color of palm oil in its natural state is red due to the high amount of beta-carotene and contains vitamin E and antioxidants in the form of flavonoids, but refined palm oil is white and does not contain carotene.

Palm Oil Production

To produce palm oil, palm fruits are first collected and sterilized with hot steam. Then the stem is separated from the fruit and the fruits are soaked in hot water steam. At this stage, the fruits are cooked and then they press the fruits, which causes the oil to come out of the cells. They also use hot water to release and circulate the oil. Then the crude oil is stored with water in large tanks for sedimentation and clarification. The fat fibers are separated from the kernels in this part, and placed in another press, from which palm kernel oil is obtained from these kernels. Crude palm oil contains a lot of water after the oil extraction stage, which is poured into large tanks to separate and clarify the solution into which the oil is continuously added so that water and oil are separated from each other. The temperature inside the tank reaches 90°C for better separation. Then it is centrifuged at a very high speed. This action causes the remaining water and salts to be separated from the crude oil. Then, by passing through the vacuum dryers, waste materials, and water are minimized. Kernel oil is obtained by mechanical pressing methods or liquid distillation methods.
