In general, there are three ways to produce molten or raw ingots, which are:
- Electric arc furnace (EAF) method
- Blast furnace method (BF)
- Induction furnace method (IMF)
Iron ingots are known as raw materials for the production of various products by undergoing operations such as cutting and shaping. Ingots, whether iron or steel, are unprocessed sections that are sometimes exchanged between different countries as currency reserves. Iron ingots are made up of scraps of iron products that can no longer be used in their original form. Of course, this is not the only way to obtain iron ingots. In general, iron ingots can be produced using mineral raw materials such as iron ore. The ingot obtained by the second method has a higher quality than other products. All kinds of iron ingots, including ignite, bloom, slab, billet, etc., are used to make products such as belts, pipes, sheets, rebar, wire, etc.
In general, there are three ways to produce molten or raw ingots, which are:
In this method, which is also called the EAF method in brief, iron scraps are used. In this way, iron scrap is poured into the electric arc furnace and melted. Meanwhile, other materials such as lime, coke, bentonite, etc. are added to the melt.
This method is more traditional compared to other methods. More than ninety percent of the iron ore in the world is used in these furnaces to produce quality iron ingots. After the iron ore enters the furnace and lime and coke are added to it, raw iron or molten cast iron is produced. At this stage, carbon and any impurities are separated with the help of oxygen and the materials go to the next unit for casting. Then they are poured and frozen.
Melt purification is not possible in these furnaces. Therefore, it is not possible to produce low-carbon ingots with this method. In addition, in this method, the number of harmful elements is more than in the previous methods, especially the electric arc furnace method. For example, more phosphorus and sulfur are produced in this method.
