Iron Ingot Production Methods
Electric arc furnace method

Blast furnace method
This method is more traditional compared to other methods. More than ninety percent of the iron ore in the world is used in these furnaces to produce quality iron ingots. After the iron ore enters the furnace and lime and coke are added to it, raw iron or molten cast iron is produced. At this stage, carbon and any impurities are separated with the help of oxygen and the materials go to the next unit for casting. Then they are poured and frozen.
Induction furnace method
Melt purification is not possible in these furnaces. Therefore, it is not possible to produce low-carbon ingots with this method. In addition, in this method, the number of harmful elements is more than in the previous methods, especially the electric arc furnace method. For example, more phosphorus and sulfur are produced in this method.
Types of Iron Ingots
- Ingot: It is one of the types of this product that has a trapezoidal cross-section. The length of this product is about 2 meters and it is usually made of gold, cast iron, aluminum, or copper. This product is mostly used to make laboratory samples.
- Slab: Another type of iron ingot is slab, which is used to produce belts, pipes, and steel sheets. The length of this product is about 12 meters and it has a rectangular cross-section.
- Bloom: This product has a square cross-section and has sides of 15 to 30 cm. This product is used to produce all kinds of profiles such as beams and studs.
